April 2006 Activity Log

4/30/06
S1A - Removed the pedal assembly, accelerator pedal and hand brake.

All of the photos I took today are here.

4/29/06
S1A - Disassembled and removed the shift mechanism, windshield, rear window, door strikes, choke and heater cables, demister vents and heater. Just a few more items to come out then time to do the frame.

All of the photos I took today are here.

S1A - Removed the steering rack, brake master cylinder and all front brake lines. Everything else in the boot must be removed after I separate the body from the frame. Contrary to the workshop manual, it was not necessary to remove the closing plate to access the steering rack bolts. Took some creative wrench handling, but wasn't at all difficult.

All of the photos I took today are here.

S1A - Disassembled the left front suspension. Everything came apart as expected. Now all of the suspension has been removed. Won't be long until it's time to extract the chassis.

All of the photos I took today are here.

S1B - Installed the Perspex side windows and took some more photos. Have no idea why there are brackets welded to the rear frame near the swirl pot and coolant pipe. The engine cover holes have been modified and no longer have screens. The odometer reads 54688 miles. There is a switch mounted on the console near the drivers right leg. Will investigate further when I get finished with 460355 and have time to attack this car.

S1B - Stopped raining today long enough to remove the cover and take some preliminary photos. At first glance, it looks pretty complete. The hood badge, gearshift knob, fuel filler neck and cap, intake manifold and carburetor are missing, but everything else appears to be there. Some frame rust in the passenger foot well area (and probably elsewhere) but it looks no worse than my S1A. Seems very restorable to me.

Today I rented a U-Haul trailer and went to New Haven, Ct. to pick up a Europa (
#460586) from Chuck Randall (who also owns S2 #652689). This one is a late S1A (sometimes called an S1B due to its S2 tail lights and grille). I think I will refer to it in this log as an S1B as well, so it's clear which S1 I'm referring to when I work on it.

Left Laurel, Md. at 3:00 AM for New Haven, Ct. and arrived in New Haven at 9:00 AM. Chuck and I loaded the car onto the U-haul and I left at 9:15 AM for the return trip to Laurel. On the return trip I stopped to visit Bruce Wnuk (owner of S2 #0318R) in New Jersey. His Gordini-equipped S2 is very nice and it sounded great as I followed him to connect back to the interstate.

Arrived in Laurel at 5:00 PM after getting stuck in traffic on I-95 for an hour. Rolled the Europa off the trailer and covered it, as it was just starting to rain. After I returned I took some photos, but it's supposed to rain until Sunday so I won't get to take inventory or more photos until then.

Some interesting facts about the trip:
Total miles traveled: 672 Miles
Fuel used: 54.98 Gallons
Average: 12.22 MPG (Mopar 318 V-8!)
Cost of Fuel: $158.71
Average Cost: $2.89 per gallon
Tolls paid: $73.60
U-Haul rental: $53.93 including Md. tax
Total cost of the trip: $286.24

S1A - Disassembled the right front suspension. Everything came apart as expected.

All of the photos I took today are here.

4/19/06
S1A - Disassembled the left rear suspension. Had to grind the e-brake clevis pin as it was frozen into the clevis. Everything else came apart as expected.

- Removed the firewall insulation and vacuumed all of the crap out of the body cavities. Next to be disassembled will be the front suspension.

S1A - Disassembled the right rear suspension. Had to grind the e-brake clevis pin as it was frozen into the clevis. Everything else came apart as expected.

S1A - Removed the rear wheel covers, straightened the tab washer and loosened the hub nuts on both rear wheels. This will make disassembly easier after the engine is removed. Just happened to have the correct 1 1/2" socket because I bought one previously for my trailer hitch ball.

Disconnected everything else from the engine and pulled it today. Next is to disassemble the rear suspension.

S1A - Removed the circlip from the shift mechanism but the control shaft was frozen into the rose joint so I removed the rose joint ball from the bracket. I still need to remove the vertical bolt from the bell crank bracket on the engine timing cover when I get the car up on jackstands. Sprayed the engine mount bolts, suspension unit bolts and rear chassis cross member bolts with Kroil so they will be easier to remove.

Took some photos of the windshield rubber surround and the locking strip for future reference.

4/1/06
S1A - Disconnected the wiring for the temp and oil pressure gauges and the oil light. Disconnected the speedometer cable and the wiring to the starter. Drained the oil. Disconnected the shift mechanism except for the circlip at the transmission cross shaft. Need to buy some circlip pliers.
