    • I'm the owner since January of 1977 of the Europa S1A numbered 460300. (the first number of the séries). The car was sold in France for the first time on 28.11.1967. The initial colour was carnival red. After forty years of use, the car is in total restoration. The colour is now Yellow. (When the car was red, everybody said : look at this old Ferrari ! Poor guys !)

    • Brought the car home Christmas of 1984. Last painted it in 1992 so it shows a bit of wear but still pretty good considering it's been in cold storage for many years. SPAX adjustables on all 4 corners, 4 new tires that have rolled 200 feet in 15 years. Gold empis with homemade center caps and Lotus logos (cast in fiberglass of course). I keep it covered in the garage and turn the motor over by hand occasionally until I have time to concentrate on this car again. According to a 1986 letter I have from Lotus, the car was built in November 1967 and shipped to a dealer called Sports Cars Unlimited in Ontario on December 14th 1967. I was told by the previous owner he believed it was displayed at Expo 67 however since Expo 67 ended on October 29th, if there was a Lotus on display, it wasn't this one.

    • I found this Europa on Craig's List, via BringATrailer.com a couple of weeks ago - and have just completed the transaction today ($100).
    • The ad (org craig'slist ad has been removed) listed the car as an S2 and the owner didn't have any other information, photos, paperwork, or chassis number.
    • The photos looked like an early S2 and I was willing to believe that is what it was (low headlights, small turn signals, no warts, single wiper, no door handles) even though the odds seemed against it. I didn't really want to think about it since I didn't figure that I'd be able to actually complete the purchase and pick it up before tomorrow (owner is moving house and it had to be out ASAP).
    • Well, I'd actually given up, but my Elan-driving friend, Peter called me last night. He knew that I was pretty bummed about not being able to get the car b/c of work (etc) and he was afraid that it was going to end up in the junkyard- so he hopped in his car last night and drove to NH. Stayed with a friend, borrowed a truck/trailer, and called me from the seller's house after it was loaded up to tell me that he has a present for me. Once he got on the road he called back to tell me the juicy details... that its a 46 (46/0327)!

    • I purchase the car from Tim Perrin some 3 or 4 years ago now. The condition remains poor, but with a UK "Spyder" spaceframe chassis.
    • As the car is so poor and unoriginal, I'm not guilty in planning to do my own homage to the great 47.
    • Cabin and exterior are to be as type 47, with a GM sourced 1.6 twim cam running throttle bodies, and Renault 5speed box.
    • Will be some years before complete, and after many visits to Mr.Winter at Banks Sevice Station, but will keep all posted.

    • I purchased the car from a shop in Waltham Massachusetts in 1969. I’ve forgotten what I paid for it but it was not much even for those times. After driving it for a couple of years I had the bright idea of dropping in a more powerful 2 liter Ford engine from an American Pinto. The planned changes included some body modifications which can be seen in the photos. However, soon after I started on the project two things changed my focus. First, Lotus came out with the Twin Cam making the engine upgrade superfluous. Second, I got married in 1972 making my time available to work on the car non-existent. The car rested in various storage conditions for the past 40+ years. Now that I am retiring, I have dragged it out from under the tarps leaves and weeds and recently relocated it to a storage area near our new home in South Carolina. Although the chassis and much of the running gear are past saving, I do have most of the engine and transmission parts. I don’t plan to restore the car, but with a new chassis/engine combination I would perhaps like to make it into a track toy.

    • I have owned Europa #460352 since the fall of 2002. I purchased it from Bill Truesdale of Bensenville,Il. Bill traded his Elva Porsche Flat fan for the Europa in 1969. Bill raced it in SCCA D production and came in fourth at the SCCA National Championship in 1972.
    • He then took it back to his machine shop and began extensive modifications. He converted the body to an S2 configuration. He changed the rear axle to a Corvair with custom fabricated half shafts. He had spool built to eliminate the differential assembly. The half shafts bolted to the spool eliminating the split pin Renualt system.
    • He also replaced the front crossmember with a much more substantial unit. He also fabricated new control arms utilizing rod end bearings instead of bushings.
    • When I purchased the car the body was attached to the chassis. Not much else. My son I spent 1 1/2 years finishing the car.
    • I went through the VSCDA driver's school in the spring of 2004. I have raced the Lotus with varying success in Vintage races.
    • The Lotus is garaged for the year on the only maintenance is new brake fluid.
    • I believe that the car was originally white. I have a few pictures from the SCCA Runoffs. The engine # is 0433. There is no trans number on the Lotus plate. I have no idea where the original engine might be.
    • The first picture is when I bought the car. The second is a the 2004 driver's school at Gingermen in Michigan.

      • I just purchased 460422 from the second owner of the car. He had owned the car since 1968. I have known him since 1973. It is a S1A with removable side windows and Lancia tail lights. Original color was yellowΰ currently red. Wood dash with French lettering for switch identification. Car is modified for auto x. Engine needs to be rebuilt. Car has not been on the road since 1988.
      • I have 2 other Europas on the site 460589 and 722471

    • It's a roller, in rough condition. Interior stripped, bumpers and headlights gone, back cover just sits there, no attaching hdwe, etc. For all of that, I'm not sure I couldn't do a couple of days of demon tweaks, and drive it home, given that the brakes work. Engine not seized, tranny shifts, tires hold air.

    • This Europa is a basket case that was disassembled about ten years ago; I purchased the Europa November 5, 2011. Photo’s will follow on another date.
    • This Europa will not be restored to pristine condition, but will instead be brought back to life as a track car to be used for auto crossing.
    • The engine delivered to me is equipped with a Gordini cross flow head and a five speed gearbox. The Europa was running when dissembled about ten years ago.

    • The deed is done. Brought the S1A back to California over the week end. Some pictures are posted under 0433 67 S1. A few observations:
      • The paint looks better in the photos than in person. The paint job is a 10 foot Earl Scheib special. Looks OK, but has some blisters, peeling and spider cracks if you look close.
      • Roll bar looks odd but is well braced. I may keep it as is.
      • Fuel filler is on the right sail area due to the roll bar using the original hole for the fill cap.
      • PO engineered lower link. Seems robust enough but will go back to stock.
      • No seat belts.
      • Shifter is very stiff and has 3 " if vertical movement.
      • Interior is in very good shape, not too crazy about the mouse grey seats.
      • The turbine style wheels are starting to grow on me. I may keep them.
      • Doing some arithmetic, the car is 42 years old !!!
      • The car does start easily and runs fairly well (at least in first gear).
      • This will be a rolling restoration.

    • Original color: L05 - Carnival Red (but faded) The buttresses of the car have large period, black striping.
  • Condition: The vehicle is 99% complete and original. I will be restoring the braking and electrical systems. Also, the Solex carburetor will be rebuilt. It has 23k plus undocumented mileage on the odometer. My desire is to keep the vehicle as a occasional driver in as original condition as possible. If anybody formerly owned this vehicle in the past, I would like to correspond with them to obtain copies of period photographs, documentation of any kind and/or any old parts to the vehicle that might be from this vehicle.

    • Update 3/13/07:
      • I was able to bring 0460497 back to life this weekend. I made several trips around the neighberhood and most everthing works well. The clutch was stuck and after eliminating the cable as the problem I disassembled. This was disappointing since I had just reassembled the front and rear end with new bearings, bushings, ujoints, bolts and paint. It turned out the problem was much easier to solve than I had thought. I discovered that my throwout bearing was fine, but the pressure plate and disk had rusted to the flywheel. After separating, sanding and lubricating everything works well. The best part was NO additional $$$$$$.
      • 460497 is really running great. The Stebro exhaust and two stage Weber downdraft sound fantastic. Acceleration is much better then I thought. The minor bad news is that my alternator has 0 output and radiator fan is rusted solid.
    • Update 3/27/07:
      • I continue to make good progress on my rolling resto of 460497. I now have all electrical lights, gages and fans working. Speedometer is still inop. I've also rewrapped the wiring harness and replaced a few wires that had rubbed raw on the frame tunnel and shorted out. Luckly these were red and a blue wires without stripes. Looks very clean and organized. When I started I had individual, albeit original wires, going everywhere.
      • Most of my inop electrical devices were because of corroded electrical connectors and bad ground connections. I think this is because alot of the connectors were disconnected for some time. For the round connectors I used a round wire brush used to clean gun or pistol barrels. Wire brush the male end and circular wire brush the female; plugged everything together and now I have all the lights including the blinkers. My S1 doesn't have backup lights but the wiring is there. The wiring diagram was exactly the same as my car wiring, which made things very easy to sort out.
      • It appears that my alternator is inop. I replaced it with a Renault R17ts alternated which bolted right up after I exchanged the pulleys. Only 3 volt output so I cheched the VR. The VR had some internal corrostion and the contacts (points) were corroded shut so I cleaned it up a bit. I still don't think I'm charging but the output voltage is now 12+ volts. I'll have to do some more checking.
      • I've also replaced my cooling fan but that is another story.
