      • The information I have on the following two Lotus 47 chassis GT-09 and GT-18, should be helpful to the Lotus 47 Registry. Both of these cars where imported into Canada by Lotus importer Sports Car Unlimited, witch was owned by Bill Brack. GT-09 came to Toronto in early 1967 and was displayed at the Toronto Sportsman Show at the Lotus car display booth and was intended to be raced by Bill Brack. As it turned out the car was sold to Al Peace who raced it in Canada. After the sale of GT-09 Bill Brack immediately ordered another car and it was GT-18 witch was also delivered in early spring of 1967. Bill Brack raced his car in Canada and the U.S. Both cars where powered with Lotus twin cam engines with Tecalemit-Jackson fuel injection originally and where converted to Weber carburetors after Bills car had a fire, and both drivers found the system to troublesome. Al Peace GT -09 stayed white when he raced it and he added the side air intake after he bought the car. Bill Bracks was originally white but after he rolled it, in its first race, he painted it Lotus Racing green with a yellow stripe. He also added a one of a kind single snorkel that he and his mechanic designed themselves.
      • As for GT-09 after Al Peace sold it, it was raced in Quebec. Jack Boxtrom found the car in the eighties and sold it to me. I started a restoration but then sold it to some one in the U.S.A. Today it is owned by Jay Embree who races it on the west coast California.
      • As for GT-18 the car was totally destroyed by a fire as I was informed by Bill Brack. Tony Cicale was the last owner before it was destroyed as the picture shows the distinctive snorkel the car had. Bill also has no recollection of the last owner.
      • I will also include Pictures of both cars GT-09 and GT-18. The images are, IMG 001and 002, are of GT- 09 Sportsman Show Toronto. IMG 004 and 006 are of GT-09 loaded on Plane for Toronto Canada. IMG 005,007,008 are of BILL Bracks car raced at Mosport at the 6 HOUR race Sun down GP. And IMG 009 was displayed on GT-09 at the Toronto Auto Show.
      • If I can be of any other help, please contact me any time.
      • Here is my recollection of the information I have on GT-09
        • 1- Lotus 47-GT-09 was imported by Sports Cars Unlimited in 1967. Bill Brack, he was the Lotus importer for Canada.
2- It was on displayed at the Canadian Sportsman Show Spring of 1967 and purchased by Al Pease.
3- Al Pease raced it under Castrol sponsorship and also had air scoops installed behind the doors of his own design.
4-At the end of the 1968 season he sold it to someone in Quebec Canada. All we know is that it was in a serious accident and it is believed, it was replaced with a new body. According to my conversation with Al Pease.
5-The car was found by Jack Boxtrom around 1980 in Quebec.
6- Dave Hinze bought the 47-09 in 1985 started a restoration but not completed.
7- Sold the car to a person from New York USA in 1988
8-Sold to Dan Orosko California USA
9-Sold to Jay Embree of California who commissioned a total restoration and races it in historic events. Car is painted Dark Blue.

    • This Lotus is one of the very early cars, with a chassis number of 47GT10. According to the Lotus Register, it was originally sold by Lotus to Nick Moor Racing, probably in early 1967, and was raced by John Blades. The current owner, an enthusiastic Lotus collector, purchased the car in Great Britain in 1995. It was previously owned by Tony Mantle of Climax Engine Services, John Harper and Jonathan Bradburn.

    • PO: Michael Budd - 1960's/1970's
      • Read with interest the history of 47 GT10…just like to mention I owned this car sometime in the late 1960's…to early 70's.
      • I purchased it from a speacialist sports car dealer in Green Lanes, Hornsey..cant remember the name, but it cost me £750!!!
      • Back then it was painted a mustard colour, and it had a Ford 1600 crossflow from a Cortina in it, mated to a Renault gearbox.
      • I used it on the road somehow…totally illegal, as it had the original Dunlop racing tyres, no useful handbrake, and I'm sure no speedometer either.
      • I used to work in a garage at the time, which came in handy, as the dynamo ran off a pully attached to the rear driveshaft, so when the car was stationary, no charge went into the battery, I used to pinch a new battery every week just to make sure it started.
      • I eventually swapped it for a 'wooden' Marcos1800…but thats another story!

        • Note from Jeff Ball 2/23/10
          • You mentioned that Tony Cicale was the last known owner before it burned. That is not correct. Tony sold the car to John Lovett, a Boulder, Colorado businessman in about 1972. It was silver topside and blue below the beltline and in rather rough shape visually. John cleaned it up mechanically and visually, selecting a medium shade of yellow for the topside and keeping blue below. John also outfitted the car with street legal hardware. I bought the car from John in about 1976 while living in Loveland, Colorado where I ran my Honda motorcycle dealership. I made no changes to the car and enjoyed driving it on public roads until the speed limit changed to the national limit of 55mph which made the car tough to drive and enjoy without getting into ticket/handcuff territory. I didn't race it because I was racing a 1970 Lotus SS twincam (one of 13 built) with great success in autocross, quarter mile (I loved putting stock Hemi Cuda's on the trailer with my 95 cu in, 1558cc peashooter; 13.7 @103mph) and a couple of road races in SCCA sanctioned local events. The Seven was so much easier to maintain in terms of dealing with a Ford bullit box and Atlas solid axle compared to the Hewland FT200 and more complex suspension design of the 47.
          • In about 1984, I sold it back to Tony Cicale and his mate Janice Champion. He relocated it back to Sag Harbor, NY and kept it for a short while before selling it because he hadn't used it and was so busy with his Indy race team activities as an engineer. A decade or so later, I contacted Tony and Janice and they could not recall who they had sold the car to; dead end for tracking its whereabouts. I was contacted in 2009 by a friend of the then-current owner who was living in Maine at the time. I received confirmation this morning that the car is safely located in New England.
      • I will also include Pictures of both cars GT-09 and GT-18. The images are, IMG 001and 002, are of GT- 09 Sportsman Show Toronto. • Update 8/28/07 by Jeff Ball:
      • I sold 47 gt 0018 back to Tony Cicale in about 1985. He transported the car to his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island, NY. It sat for several years and he sold the car to someone who lived in Canada. Tony is unable to recall the name or any other details regarding the buyer. I've posted requests for information about the car on a few NE states vintage and Lotus car club sites with no response. It was a fabulous car. I sold the car because it was frustrating to operate it on public roads during the 55mph speed limits imposed during that period of time. It would reach the national speed limit in 1st gear! I could redline it in fifth gear at 7,500rpm which calculated to 168mph. I found myself driving the car but 50 miles or so per year, so mistakenly thought that Tony would put it to better use.

    • Was in reMARQUE article "A MOST UNUSUAL EUROPA" 2/81
      • One of two single snorkel cars built.
      • The car was originally shipped to Canada where it started its racing career. Little is known about the car's first owners and races. Eventually it was purchased by Tony Cicale who competed in endurance races in the Northeast for a couple of seasons. Tony kept the car in excellent mechanical condition and updated the safety features including the roll cage and fuel cells. Later he moved on to sports racers and Can-Am cars so the 47 was sold to John Lovett of Boulder. Lovett restored the car, bringing it to its present condition of mechanical and cosmetic excellence. Ball was the next purchaser and has now owned the car for four years. Again the 47 is up for sale. (2/81 info)

      • It was originally bought in late Dec 1967 through Lotus East (Dutchess Auto Company) by Richard Yagami for $6686. It was picked up at the dock (Dunnington & Arnold Customhouse Broker & Foreign Freight) in early February 1968. In March of 1968 it made its shake-down run at the Lime Rock Racetrack, which required snow removal to clear the racing surface. It then raced at Sebring on March 23, 1968 (car number 68) where it lost several laps due to starter motor problems before finally (near the end of the 12 hour race) being involved in a race ending crash (Yagami was the owner & Dyno Racing was the sponsor). After depositing a large portion of the fiberglass body in the paddock's 50 gal garbage drums, the remains of 47gt67 were taken back to Richard's shop in Connecticut. It is currently highly modified from standard and rebuilt following Sebring crash with semi-spaceframe chassis and lift-off rear body. It is currently for sale by the original owner Richard Yagami.

      • With regard to Lotus 47-70. My friends father Mr Ted Bunce purchased this car from Team Lotus during the winter of '68/69 in complete form with the Fuel Injected Twin Cam engine.
      • The car was then painted in the Team colours of Mike Spence Racing of Reform Road, Maidenhead, Berkshire - Mike Spence Ltd were Lotus dealers and following Mike,s death in practice for Indianapolis in the works Lotus Indy car, the business passed on to his widow, and was then sold on to Mr Vivian Talford-Cook. There was a team of 3 cars consisting of Ted Bunce (Lotus 47), Peter Beaver (Lotus 23b GT Mercury SCA), and Bob Marvin (Lotus 23b TwinCam) run under the Mike Spence Racing banner and painted in their colours of Orange with Purple stripes. All the cars were actually owned by the drivers with assistance given by Mike Spence Developments.
      • With regard to Ted Bunce's 47, the ex Gold Leaf Team Lotus car the agreement of purchase from Lotus included the proviso that the car would not be seen in a privateers hands or appear in public in its Gold Leaf Team Lotus livery and we collected the car in January '1969 and took it back to Teds home first and then to the paint shop for new livery (painted by Alan Rigalsford).
      • The car was run in various club racing events in 1969 mainly at Silverstone and Snetterton plus a couple of International events and achieved class and overall wins at this level but was losing out to many of the lighter Chevron B8 and Lotus 23b based specials despite its superior handling. The car was driven by Ted Bunce (owner) and by Rex Bates (chief mechanic) during 1969.
      • Over the winter of 1969/1970, Ted decided, despite the fact that he was suffering with severe arthritis, to source a Ford Cosworth FVA engine to fit for the 1970 season. As a result we did a deal with Frank Williams to purchase one of the FVA's from his Formula 2 team. The engine had been used in the South American (Temporada) series during 69/70 and we then collected it from the Docks at Southampton and fitted it in to the 47.
      • The next problem we had was the front brakes not being able to cope with the extra power (225hp) and we then did a deal with March Engineering to obtain some bigger brakes from their Formula 2 car which solved the problem.
      • The 47 was then raced through 1970 but we had to argue the cars engine (FVA) eligibility as a group 4 car at the International events on a couple of meetings. It won a number of meetings outright in 1970 including beating John Jordans (ex Essex Wire) GT40.
      • It then did a couple of races in 1971 before Ted sold the rolling chassis and loaned me the Cosworth FVA and original Hewland FT200 gearbox to build my 1st race car.
      • I believe that this car is now in a private collection in Japan, but would be interested to learn where it is now.

    • After Chalut came Swizz citizen Walo Schibler, proprietor of the ex-Jo Siffert INTERSPORT S.A. Garage, Fribourg, who developed the car into the racing machine that is pictured on the fotos.
    • It was sold in race ready conditions to Rolf Wurst from Ulm on 03.12.1976. He applied the red and white colour scheme and kept the car until 03.09.1989, still racing. During this last season he was sent into the armcoes by a backmarker who´s brakes failed, while he had this brilliant Lockeed system that had been installed by the Swizz. The repair was done by 47/GT/13 owner B. Wälchli from Tavannes using a S2 front section, the car was then painted all red. Wurst describes a car with a lot of power (FVA), questionable handling, adaequate brakes and the great advantage that one could adapt the gearbox ratios to every situation, while the opposition had to cling to the standard homologated transmissions. He reports constant competitiveness even in the late 80ies.
    • Wurst sold the engine to a Abarth specialist Bernd Haberkorn in Reutti near Ulm and the body to a forwarding agent named Ernst from Reutlingen, Germany, who destroyed it by trying to keep it going with little experience.

    • I bought this car 2003 in small pieces, not complete, build it up in 100% original with the best spars.
    • This car had an outstanding and unusual race history, driven by Paul Kerridge in the late 1960's and early 1970's both in the U.K. and later in Germany, Holland and Sweden. It was mentioned in many articles both in Autosport and Motoring News in 1968, 69 and 70 and was a winner in Autocross and Rallycross Championships and received coverage and congratulations from Lotus Cars. Fully documented by photographs and film from the first and second owners, the car is now in faultless condition with FIA papers and an HTTP passport. Raceable in Tour de France Automobilia and BARC Spirit. There is a fire extinguisher system, full harness, and roll cage, Girling 3-pot calipers, and twin aluminium long distance tanks. Everything is new or rebuilt to the highest standard. There are Registration papers and Number plates for both the U.K. and Sweden.

47/76 has done just 3 hours running both on a rolling road and the track, for set-up purposes and is thus ready to race. The 1598cc steel Lotus-BRM twin cam gives 154bhp at the rear wheels and the Hewland FT 200 is very sweet. There are very few of these cars in raceworthy codition in the world, perhaps 2 in the USA , 2 in Japan, 2 in Portugal and 1 in the UK. The car has not been seen in public in the U.K. since 1976, but is well known to the Historic Lotus Register.
